Drexel units to replace '40s apartments near Northwest Highway

A builder now finishing a tower near Highland Park is planning an even bigger project in North Dallas.

Drexel Development is working on plans for its second condo project located near Northwest Highway.

The Bandera Avenue complex will replace two blocks of apartments built in the 1940s.

"We plan to start construction in April," Drexel Development partner Robert Edelman said.

The development will have 10 three-story buildings w! hich will contain more than 140 residential units.

Architect Smith, Ekblad & Associates designed the planned project along with the Drexel's Highlander building on Oak Lawn Avenue.

"Both of the projects will have the same quality and finish," said Mr. Edelman, a partner in the firm with Bob Dale and Glenn Wiggins.

The nine-story Drexel Highlander building has 48 condominiums ranging from about 2,100 to 4,700 square feet. The units are selling for about $300 per square foot.

"We are about 40 percent sold and should be done with the building in about six weeks," Mr. Edelman said.

Drexel has also converted its Montane building in Uptown into condominiums and is finishing up sales there.
